Willingdon Community School House System
The Willingdon Community School House System was launched in July 2017. The aim of the House System is to give students team spirit, a sense of community and to support the development of personal excellence, through a wider contribution throughout the school.
We began the process by asking students and staff to make suggestions for the names of the houses. These names were shortlisted and the winning names were astrological signs: Andromeda, Hercules, Orion, Pegasus and Phoenix. Each house has a House Leader and two House Captains from each year group. Each tutor group and all staff at the school have been placed into a house. To enable student to embrace the personal excellence of compassion, each house voted for a charity which they would support.
There are many Inter-house events throughout the academic school year from all areas of the curriculum. This is to ensure that everyone, including staff, has the opportunity to represent their house in something that they enjoy or are good at. House events include: various sporting activities, subject specific quizzes, art competition, bake off and six-word challenge. The year culminates with the fiercely contested school Sport’s Day.
House Leaders facilitate the events but we do encourage the House Captains and students to take the lead with management and organisation with the support of the House Leaders, as this develops their social, team building, communication and organisation skills.
All students have the opportunity to represent their house and earn achievement points, alongside specially awarded house points. These are added weekly and shared, to give the spirit of healthy competition. At the end of the school year, all points overall are added up to award the overall inter-house trophy. Alongside this a trophy is awarded for the winning house for Sport’s Day.
