Our Governors

The Governors set aims & objectives for the school

Our Governing Body

At Willingdon Community School the Governing Body is immensely proud of how it helps to improve educational standards so our children and young people have the chance to realise their full potential.

Governors share in the leadership of the school focussing on strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing. As critical friends we enable our school to run as effectively as possible, working alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to our children.

Governors bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their professional and personal lives to the governing board and the school benefits greatly from working with skilled volunteers, for example we currently have experience of education, finance, premises management and human resources.

The Governing Body helps the Headteacher to make key strategic decisions. It is the job of the  Governing Body to set the school’s aims and objectives around how the school will develop and improve. We set policies, formulate plans and agree targets to help the school achieve these objectives.

The Governing Body is there to support and challenge the school’s senior leadership team. We play a crucial role in holding the Headteacher to account for securing the best possible outcomes for pupils. By challenging key decisions and asking pertinent questions about the school’s performance data. We aim to guarantee high standards in education. We do not get involved in the day to day running of the school: it is the Headteacher’s responsibility to run the school.

The Governing Body has a strategic role in the financial management of the school. Our key responsibilities include setting financial priorities through the school improvement plan, the 3 year financial plan and the annual budget.

Volunteers who take on the role of a school governor need to be committed. Full Governing Body meetings are normally held once a term (i.e. 5 or 6 times a year). As we are responsible for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the school and its curriculum, visits help us to understand more about our school and the reality of school life. Governor visits to classrooms or meetings with key staff are not a form of inspection but serve as a clear monitoring function on the implementation of the school’s strategic planning.

In addition to the main meetings we are required to have certain statutory committees such as the Pay Committee, Appeals Committee or Headteacher’s performance management review group. We also have several less formal, but equally productive, working groups : currently these cover Curriculum, Vulnerable Learners and HR. These groups allow governors to drill down and get a greater depth of knowledge about key aspects of the school. Most governors are members of one or two of these committees/working groups, whose work is reported back to the Full Governing Body.

Taking on the role of Governor should not be entered into lightly but it is extremely worthwhile and can be very rewarding. For further information please contact the Clerk or Chair of Governors via the Clerks email; clerk@willingdonschool.org.uk
